「私たちは海外に通用する写真集を作れるか」
今春、出版社 @threebooks_publishing から、ベルギー人アーティスト @katherinelongly の写真集「TO TELL MY REAL INTENTIONS, I WANT TO EAT ONLY HAZE LIKE A HERMIT」が刊行されます。

そして、この一冊を支えるのは、京都の印刷会社 @sunmcolor の繊細な技術とディレクション力。

写真家、デザイナー、印刷技術者―
異なる立場の作り手たちが、国境を越えて一冊の「写真集」をかたちにする。そこには、単なる印刷や翻訳を超えた、「作品を成立させる設計」が存在します。

・なぜこの写真集は、日本の出版社に託されたのか？
・印刷・造本の選択が、どう作品性を支えるのか？
・この一冊は、これからどこに届くのか？

今回のトークイベントでは、この写真集制作に関わったカトリーヌ・ロングリー
Three Booksの共同代表でもありデザイナーでもある鈴木萌
サンエムカラーのプリンティングディレクター中島風美、大畑政孝の4名が登壇。
プロジェクトの裏側から、越境する写真集をめぐるリアルな思考と実践を語り合います。

✔ 海外とつながる写真集制作に興味がある方
✔ 編集や印刷が作品に与える影響に関心がある方
✔ 写真表現を“本”というフォーマットで深めたい方

そんなあなたに向けた、現場の熱量と細部が詰まった90分です。日本という場所で起きた越境的な写真集づくりのプロセスを通して、写真集というメディアが持つ拡張性と、これからの可能性を一緒に探りましょう。

カトリーヌ・ロングリー　@katherinelongly
ベルギー/ ブリュッセルを拠点に活動するビジュアル・アーティスト。写真、コミュニケーション、人類学それぞれの専門知識を活かした作品制作を行う。毎年数ヶ月間滞在する日本でこの国の社会的課題に焦点を当てた作品も数多い。

鈴木萌(Three Books共同代表) @moesuzuki.bbi
作家活動の傍ら、写真集出版レーベル「Three Books」の共同代表として、さまざまな写真集のディレクション、編集、デザインに関わる。

中島風美 @2am1_3
写真集・作品集、展覧会図録の印刷に携わりたく、2023年サンエムカラーに入社。ハイクオリティなアートブックを作ることを使命として、新人プリンティングディレクターとして精進中。

大畑政孝 @dopecoara
サンエムカラープリンティングディレクター。写真集、美術図録といった本をはじめ、文化財複製、コンテンポラリーのアートプリントなど幅広いプリントの設計を行う。またカラーマネジメント技術者でもあり、印刷機やプリンタ、スキャナーの色設計も行う。音楽オタク。

この写真集のアーティストエディションが作られたのは2018年。それから6年経過した去年、出版の話が持ち上がった。
ベルギー出身のカトリーヌが日本でのアーティストレジデンシーに参加しながら制作した作品。食との個人的な関係を10人の世代も性別も異なる人々へのインタビューを通して探ったプロジェクトで、タイトルの意「本心を打ち明けるななら、仙人のように霞だけを食べていたい…」はそのうちの一人が語った言葉になる。
日本の食が華やかにフィーチャーされる今、一方でそこに潜む社会の歪みはますます濃くなっている気もする。過剰なルッキズム、貧困、孤独、家族関係、プレッシャー… 10人が語るとても個人的な食の記憶と関係性、そして彼らがカトリーヌに渡された使い捨てカメラで撮影した写真たちは、今この瞬間も読み手にさまざまな角度から食の本質を探る問いを投げかけてくる。

An artist's edition of this photobook was initially published in 2018. Six years later, last year, the idea of publishing the book from Three Books came up.
This is a story explores numerous personal relationships with food through interviews with ten people of different generations and genders, that the Belgian-born artist Katherine created while participating in artist residencies in Japan. The title comes from the words by one of the ten people interviewed by Katherine.
At a time when Japanese food is featuring more and more glamorously, on the other hand, the social distortions that lurk there seem to be getting deeper. Excessive lookism, poverty, loneliness, family relationships, pressure…; the very personal memories and relationships with food that the ten people talked about, and the photographs they took with the disposable camera Katherine gave them, pose questions to explore the nature of relationship between food and human from various aspects.

Eating is never just a technical act.
A source of pleasure or a control tool over one’s body, a way to connect with people or solitary delight, uninhibited or generating anxiety, our relationship with food can take many faces. It is intimately connected to our emotions, and acts as a subtle revealer of our social and family history. But what are its underlying roots?

During several residencies in Japan, the artist interviewed ten people with different ages and backgrounds, with or without eating disorders, on the subject of their relationship with food and their bodies, and recorded their stories. Then Katherine asked these individuals to illustrate this relationship from their own point of view, using a disposable camera.

At the crossroads of art and anthropology, this project invites everyone to dig to discover where their relationship with food and their body is rooted.

「食べること」は単なる「行動」にとどまらない…. 食と私たちの関係はさまざまな顔を持つ。しかしこの多様な関係は一体どこから来ているのか？ロングリーは日本でのアーティストレジデンスに参加しながら、年齢、背景、摂食障害の経験など異なる10人に、食と身体との関係をテーマにインタビューを行い、使い捨てカメラで自分と食の関係を撮影するよう依頼した。アートと人類学が交差するところに位置するこの写真集は、食と身体の関係がどこから起源し、影響しているのかを私たちに教え、深い問いを投げかけてくる。

「食べること」は単なる「行動」にとどまらない。喜びの源と同時に自分の体をコントロールする道具。人とつながる手段である一方、孤独な楽しみ。自由気ままになれるものでもあり、不安を生み出すもの…。食と私たちの関係はさまざまな顔を持つ。感情と密に結びつき、社会的かつ個人的な歴史を照らし出すことにもできる。しかしこの食との多様な関係は一体どこから来ているのか？
カトリーヌ・ロングリーは日本でのアーティストレジデンスに参加しながら、年齢、背景、摂食障害の経験など異なる10人に、食と身体との関係をテーマにインタビューを行い、使い捨てカメラで自分と食の関係を撮影するよう依頼した。
アートと人類学が交差するところに位置するこの写真集は、食と身体の関係がどこから起源し、影響しているのかを私たちに教え、深い問いを投げかけてくる。

Eating is never just a technical act.
A source of pleasure or a control tool over one’s body, a way to connect with people or solitary delight, uninhibited or generating anxiety, our relationship with food can take many faces. It is intimconnected to our emotions, and acts as a subtle revealer of our social and family history. But what are its underlying roots?

During several residencies in Japan, the artist interviewed ten people with different ages and backgrounds, with or without eating disorders, on the subject of their relationship with food and their bodies, and recorded their stories. Then Katherine asked these individuals to illustrate this relationship from their own point of view, using a disposable camera.

At the crossroads of art and anthropology, this project invites everyone to dig to discover where their relationship with food and their body is rooted.

「食べること」は単なる「行動」にとどまらない。喜びの源と同時に自分の体をコントロールする道具。人とつながる手段である一方、孤独な楽しみ。自由気ままになれるものでもあり、不安を生み出すもの…。食と私たちの関係はさまざまな顔を持つ。感情と密に結びつき、社会的かつ個人的な歴史を照らし出すことにもできる。しかしこの食との多様な関係は一体どこから来ているのか？

幾度も重なる大震災、コロナ禍を経て、これまでのわたしたちの働き方の”当たり前”が大きく崩れはじめています。 そんな時代の劇的な変化を、ピンチではなく、チャンスに変える。 そのような新しい働き方は、どうすれば可能なのでしょうか？
本イベントでは、教員を辞め、バックパッカーとして旅をしながら写真家としての生き方を模索し、写真集出版社「Three Books」も立ち上げられている吉田亮人さんと、 証券会社を辞め、やはりバックパッカーとして世界を旅し、紆余曲折を経て出版社を創業、編集を生業としている雑誌『新百姓』編集長のおぼけんさんのお二人の対談を通じて、そんな問いへの新たなヒントを見出していきます。
お二人は10年以上前に、旅先の中国・成都で出会って以来の旅仲間でもいらっしゃいます。サラリーマン時代から、旅を経て、出版社の創業に至ったお二人のこれまでの経験を通じて、当日ご参加いただいた方々それぞれの暮らしや働き方を、新しい視点で見つめ直す機会となれば幸いです。

1982年、国東半島の兼業農家に生まれる。「金にならないから」という理由で父が稲作を辞めたことから資本主義に疑問を持ち、立命館アジア太平洋大学卒業後、証券会社に就職。  リーマン・ショックでさらに疑問を深め、2010年に退職、世界の経済の現場を巡るフィールドワークへ。  2013年に帰国後、資本主義に代わる新たな社会システムを探究するため、次世代起業家向けの相互扶助コミュニテイ形成型創業支援プログラムを立ち上げ、83社150名の起業家に伴走。 2018年より、カネを目的としない新たな投資の枠組みを探究するため、Mistletoeにてスタートアップ投資に携わる。その傍ら、自治体や大学と連携し起業家の苗床づくりを手掛けるおせっかい社かけるを創業。  2021年、大分県国東半島に移住、「つくるを探究する暮らし」を始める。  2022年、施とともに雑誌『新百姓』を創刊し、現職。  著書に『新百姓宣言』（ている舎）、『なぜ日本人はこんなに働いているのにお金持ちになれないのか？ 21世紀のつながり資本論』（いろは出版）など。

"The Dialogue of Two" is the nearly three-year story of photographer Akihito Yoshida's grandmother until her death at the age of 88, left alone after Yoshida's cousin Daiki, who lived with her, took his own life. The photobook evolves around a ‘tale’ that the grandmother told the photographer over and over again before her death. It’s been 5 years since the prequel to this story, "The Absence of Two", which recounts the everyday life of the grandmother and Daiki and how it came to an end, was published. The artist's edition of "The Dialogue of Two" (2023) was shortlisted for the Images Vevey Book Award 2023/24, Kimura Ihei Photography Award and the publisher’s edition from Three Books was launched in January 2025.

本作が制作されるきっかけになった「あるメール」をはじめとして、約2年余りの時間をかけて制作した数多くのモックアップ、そして完成された限定49部のアーティストブックの展示、そしてThree Booksから本日ローンチされる写真集の制作・印刷の過程をお見せする展示となります。

『The Dialogue of Twoについて』
2017年、KYOTOGRAPHIE国際写真フェスティバルで発表された「The Absence of Two」（発表時のタイトルは『Falling Leaves』）は作者である吉田の祖母（88歳）と、いとこの大輝（23歳）の2人の日常と、大輝の突然の自死によってその日常が終わりを迎えるところまでを描いた作品だった。
本作品「The Dialogue of Two」は最愛の孫である大輝を失い、一人残された祖母の姿から始まる。
窓辺に立ち、ただぼうっと立って外を眺める祖母。ご飯を一人で食べ、ベッドで横になる祖母。
当たり前にあった大輝との日常が失われ、悲しみの底に生きる祖母の喪失感と絶望感は筆舌に尽くし難いものだったに違いない。
そんな祖母がある日、吉田に「ある話」を語って聞かせた——。
本作はこの「ある話」を軸に、この世に残された者と、あの世に行ってしまった者との対話と、双方に流れる愛の深さを「写真」を通して紡いだ物語である。

本作『The Dialogue of Two』は、2022年にインディペンデントキュレーターの後藤由美とともに限定49部のアーティストエディションとして制作・刊行され、Images Vevey2023/2024（スイス）や第47回木村伊兵衛賞（日本）の最終選考にノミネートされ、瞬く間に完売。

Three Booksとしては2年目の活動の年となった2024年、
新しいタイトルとして @hajimekimura の「嘘の家族」の刊行を5月に行い、刊行記念のイベントや展示を京都の誠光社、恵文社、東京の野村商店、そしてTitleにて開催させていただくことができました。またブックフェアへの出展も今年から本格的に始まり、Fukuoka Art Book Fairを皮切りに、Kai Art Book Fair、Taipei Art Book Fair、Tokyo Art Book Fairにも参加。イベントやブックフェアでの新しい出会い、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、台湾、中国、タイ、そして日本の書店さんやディストリビューターを通した出会い…など、Three Booksの本がじわじわとさらに広い世界へと届けられている様子にとても感慨深い一年となりました。

2024年夏から本格的に動いてきた新刊 @yoshidaakihito 写真集「The Dialogue of Two」の刊行の準備も整いつつあります。年が明けてすぐ、2025年1月11日（土）より、東京の　@remindersphotographystronghold にて開催される出版記念展を皮切りに、順次世界中の皆様に新しい写真集を届けられるよう邁進していきます。
また、25年はさらに2冊の出版を控え現在そちらの制作も進行中です。ぜひ新しい年もよろしくお願いいたします。

The related events and exhibitions to celebrate this publication were held at Seikosha and Keibunsha in Kyoto, Nomura Shoten and Title in Tokyo. We also started participating in book fairs this year, starting with the Fukuoka Art Book Fair and continuing with the Kai Art Book Fair, Taipei Art Book Fair, and Tokyo Art Book Fair. We were so grateful for new encounters at those events and book fairs, and also through bookshops and distributors in the UK, France, Germany, Taiwan, China, Thailand and in Japan... It has been a very emotional year to see Three Books' photobooks slowly being delivered to a wider audience.

We are also getting ready to publish a new title, “The Dialogue of Two” by Akihito Yoshida, which has been in full swing since the summer of 2024.
Starting with a commemorative exhibition in Reminders Photography Stronghold gallery in Tokyo on Saturday 11 January 2025, we will be working hard to bring this new photobook to customers all over the world. We are also preparing to publish two more books in 2025.

Three Booksとしては2年目の活動の年となった2024年、
新しいタイトルとして @hajimekimura の「嘘の家族」の刊行を5月に行い、刊行記念のイベントや展示を京都の誠光社、恵文社、東京の野村商店、そしてTitleにて開催させていただくことができました。またブックフェアへの出展も今年から本格的に始まり、Fukuoka Art Book Fairを皮切りに、Kai Art Book Fair、Taipei Art Book Fair、Tokyo Art Book Fairにも参加。イベントやブックフェアでの新しい出会い、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、台湾、中国、タイ、そして日本の書店さんやディストリビューターを通した出会い…など、Three Booksの本がじわじわとさらに広い世界へと届けられている様子にとても感慨深い一年となりました。

2024年夏から本格的に動いてきた新刊 @yoshidaakihito 写真集「The Dialogue of Two」の刊行の準備も整いつつあります。年が明けてすぐ、2025年1月11日（土）より、東京の　@remindersphotographystronghold にて開催される出版記念展を皮切りに、順次世界中の皆様に新しい写真集を届けられるよう邁進していきます。
また、25年はさらに2冊の出版を控え現在そちらの制作も進行中です。ぜひ新しい年もよろしくお願いいたします。

The year 2024 was the second year of Three Books;
we published a new title, Hajime Kimura's Family of Lies, in May. The related events and exhibitions to celebrate this publication were held at Seikosha and Keibunsha in Kyoto, Nomura Shoten and Title in Tokyo.
